Ever wanted to try your hand at the sweet, uplifting sounds of the Caribbeans steel pan?
Join Melvin Zakers, one of Leeds’ long-standing steel pan players, for a relaxed, hands-on workshop where anyone can have a go.
No experience needed!
In this drop-in session you will:
• Learn the basics of steel pan technique
• Play simple rhythms and melodies in minutes
• Discover the history of steel pan music and its roots in Caribbean culture
• Experience the joy of making music together in a welcoming, community atmosphere.
Melvin first picked up the pans over 40 years ago in Chapeltown and went on to play with the legendary New World Steel Orchestra.
The steel pan originated in Trinidad and Tobago, where communities ingeniously transformed oil drums into instruments that now carry the heartbeat of Caribbean music around the world.
No need to book, just drop in and have a go!
All ages welcome, but all children must be accompanied by an adult.
11am – 5pm.
